Grounds For Sculpture is a year-round, 42 acre New Jersey-sculpture park that invites you to unwind, explore and connect in ever-changing art-filled gardens. Outdoors, over 300 contemporary sculptures are sited across the park, while temporary exhibitions from established and emerging artists are featured in six indoor galleries.

Grounds For Sculpture was founded by artist and philanthropist Seward Johnson. It opened in 1992 on the former New Jersey State Fairgrounds and was a natural extension of its predecessor, Johnson Atelier. Hundreds of artists studied and produced work at the Atelier, and Johnson saw the potential of the neighboring bygone fairgrounds as a place where artwork could be sited within the landscape, and visitors could delight in discovering contemporary sculpture.

More than 700 artists have had their work on view here. The collection contains sculptures by 150 artists, including Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith, George Segal, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Isaac Witkin, Joyce J. Scott, Willie Cole, and founder Seward Johnson.

As of May 2025, the sculpture park includes one of founder, artist and philanthropist Seward Johnson’s other great creations: Johnson Atelier and its state of the art modeling, scanning, milling, painting and finishing capabilities, along with its assets including the seven acre Meadow; the physical plant that houses the Johnson Atelier; the Motor Exhibits Building, which currently houses studios for 25 artists; and living accommodations for guest artists. Since 1974, Johnson Atelier has been an incubator for artists from across the globe to grow their practices freely through collaboration, and with innovative production techniques and technology. Over 40% of the artwork on view at Grounds For Sculpture has been produced at Johnson Atelier by artists ranging from Magdalena Abakanowicz, Beverly Pepper, George Segal, Kiki Smith, Michele Oka Donor, Tom Otterness, Roberto Lugo, and a rare work in bronze by Marisol.

Grounds For Sculpture is a public not-for-profit organization governed by a Board of Trustees who oversee the successful operation of the sculpture park, arboretum, and museum. As a nonprofit public institution, Grounds For Sculpture relies on the support of visitors, art patrons, donations and grants to offer its rich programs and activities each year.

We invite you to join us and enjoy the truly unique experience of Grounds For Sculpture.
